Misty – The Erroll Garner Story
Documentary on legendary jazz pianist
Documentary about the life and work of jazz pianist Erroll Garner. The man for whom the piano was invented.
Pianist Erroll Garner, a self-taught genius, has forever left his mark on jazz. His song Misty, which he claims he composed on an airplane between concerts, became a standard upon its release and remains one of the most covered ballads in the world.
Who was hiding behind the charming smile of this friendly man from the ghettos of Pittsburgh? His talent propelled him to the top of international stages. He led a turbulent life.
Erroll Garner is one of the giants of jazz, almost forgotten today. Looking back on the life and music of Erroll Garner is also looking back on the decisive decades in the United States between the 1950s and 1970s. These were the years when the American dream was born and then faded. America was caught between the rise of capitalism, consumerism, racism, and the Vietnam War.
In the film Misty, all of this is explored. Just like his all-powerful manager Martha Glaser, the women in his life, his musicians, and his rejected daughter Kim.
Following this is a concert by jazz trumpeter Nils Petter Molvaer, who composed the soundtrack for Misty.
