Louis Armstrong was one of the few black musicians who were popular among the white population in the 1950s and 1960s. Armstrong, also known as Satchmo or Satch, an abbreviation for Satchelmouth, did everything he could to maintain that popularity. He could not afford a scandal, but there was one: officially married, he maintained a secret relationship with a woman for 12 years, with whom he had a daughter.
This film screening is combined with the show “LOUIS!” a live music concert by Michael Varekamp and his band, in jazz club Paradox. If possible, we try to bring the American filmmaker John Alexander to Tilburg for an extended live interview, together with Armstrong’s daughter Sharon Preston-Folta and trumpeter Michael Varekamp.
