Film 1-800-On-Her-Own about feminist singer/songwriter Ani DiFranco, known for her powerful political and social lyrics.

Singer, activist, entrepreneur, feminist icon — Ani DiFranco has been a voice that cannot be ignored for thirty years. In the 1990s, she broke through with her raw, poetic songs about feminism, politics and self-determination, and she became a figurehead of the DIY (Do It Yourself) movement by founding her own record label Righteous Babe Records.

The documentary 1-800-On-Her-Own:  now showing at Music Film Festival

The film offers an intimate and impressive portrait of this unique artist. With rare archive material, personal interviews and a wealth of live music, the film shows how DiFranco’s life and work are inextricably linked. The title refers to the phone number her independent label used to sell albums in the early days.

More than just a music film, 1-800-On-Her-Own is a story about creative autonomy, political courage and the power of your own voice in a world that often prefers to listen to something else.

After the film, American film director Dana Flor will be interviewed by Júlia Fassy-Steenbakker, founder of the queer reading club Pride & Paperback. Dana Flor has made some high-profile films, such as ‘Check It’ about a black gay gang, produced by Steve Buscemi and Stanley Tucci, or the documentary about corrupt politician Marion Barry, which is currently being remade as a fictional film by Spike Lee.

The screening will be followed by a discussion with film director Dana Flor, who will come to Tilburg especially for this event.
